Jon Doran Artist Statement
The Semi-Abstract series is a continuing set of larger, mixed media paintings that combine loose, abstract brushwork with tight realism, in which a figure is depicted, surrounded by an intense and invasive abstracted space. These works are visual metaphors depicting humanity in the walk of life, with what I like to think as experiences and occurrences fluctuating around them in an unidentifiable void. The amalgamation of contrasting elements, painting techniques and media is a reoccurring motif. Earlier pieces of the series have explored specifically the subject of humanity in times of adversity and what people look to for strength but they have developed into a more general observation of identity. I don’t think of these as portraits as such, but as more depersonalised representations of human beings.
Order amidst chaos; finding a place of calmness and contemplation within the storm that besets is a subject that interests me. Work commences with freehand abstracted painting; contrasting elements, in colour, tone, media and technique to compose a form of “chaos” on canvas, then working it until the point of resolution. My aim in this series is not to provide a concluded statement, but rather to present an open-ended scenario. This ambiguity hopefully allows the viewer to fill-in the gaps and reach their own conclusion.
As I undertake exploration of various media and methods, I return regularly to the solid foundation of observational figurative work, as a centre of gravity from which further work may develop. The figure studies are two of many experimental drawings in a range of different media; breaking down the human figure to it’s essential components, yet retaining recognisable elements, depicting passage and motion.
